Michigan Corps Fellow Spotlight: Jason Aoraha
5/28/2013

Michigan Corps launched our Fellowship Program to extend an opportunity for dedicated Fellows to build the work of our exciting social change initiatives! Read about one of our summer Fellows, Jason, who is excitedly supporting the work of Kiva Michigan to fund and champion local businesses!

Jason joined Michigan Corps' Fellows Program this summer to support the work of our Kiva Michigan initiative! We're excited to introduce Jason with a recap on the following conversation about his experience as a Fellow!

What drew you to the opportunity to join Michigan Corps' Fellows program?

I've spent the majority of my life living in the outskirts of Detroit, witnessing firsthand its unfortunate difficulties over the years. Over the course of my studies, I have come to highly respect and appreciate the generous work done by organizations that recognize the need to help individuals searching for a way to help others. My interests lie in helping Detroit revitalize itself, and also experiencing the application of multiple development oriented objectives pursued by Michigan Corps throughout the entire state. It's a great opportunity because it allows me to directly help businesses in the area, increase my exposure to social entrepreneurship and further the process of development in Michigan!

Tell us a bit about your day to day work as a Fellow.

I've been given a great support system and mentor to introduce me to the business and entrepreneur support process through the Kiva Michigan initiative! Through Kiva Michigan, I help entrepreneurs acquire a clearer understanding of how to establish their business in a financially stable and promising way. At the same time, I provide businesses and entrepreneurs with a connection to a unique funding program in order to advance their current business, or build a new one from the ground up! I work with many individuals and groups, so finding connections between them also allows me to provide them with a great network.  All in all, I love making connections in this space!

What do you hope to do after your Fellowship?

I hope to continue working with a development oriented mindset focused on a broad spectrum of opportunities; whether that be internationally or state wide. I would like to be a part of an influential generation; pioneering a change in the way individuals, social entrepreneurs and government work together in order to foster development.

What's your favorite Michigan memory?

Too many to choose from! Between my time spent at Michigan State University, road trips to the scenic west side of the state, and getting the chance to take an exclusive capitol tour after working at the Capitol building, I'd say I have several memories that really stand out!
